The area where the villages Balinge, Garminge and Mantinge arose is called de Broekstreek. A name that goes back to the Middle Ages, the time that forests were found on the wet grounds. The word “broek” means a on wet ground growing forest. Where we now find the Mantingerweiden, old meadows along the river, formerly were these forests. The still remaining Mantingerbos is a remnant of such a forest.
